In the university policy and development plan for the period 2007-2011, Prince of Songkla University has adopted the direction of development which is consistent with its vision of being a leading university in the Asia region with the obligations of producing graduates, providing academic services and preserving arts and culture; employing research-based approach. There are several indicators which serve to illustrate the research directions of the University. The University has initiated a system that would change the organization culture to one that aims for more research and graduate study involvement, and targeted its effort in becoming excellent in certain disciplines. It is hope that the achievement of being excellent in appropriately selected disciplines would win renown for the University as well as creating example of organizational culture that concentrates on carrying out the principal missions of the organization. The University aims to be an authority on the subjects of para rubber, oil palm, sea food, Songkla lake and Islamic Studies.

     The group has concentrated on the research of natural rubber foam, especially on the production process which can be applied to the industrial scale production. The research is thus comprehensive in order to cover the process of preparation of natural rubber compound, formation of foam, control of properties and quality of the products; as well as to investigate other important factors related to or affecting the properties of natural rubber foam. In addition, the research works also cover the issues closely related to natural rubber industry such as developing new products from natural rubber, improving the production of existing natural rubber products.

Research and development in nanotechnology is directed towards the understanding and control of matter and materials at dimensions of nanometers (0.000000001 m) and towards the creating of novel materials, devices, and systems that have unique and useful properties. The applications of nanotechnology already lead to the development of economic valuable products with even more sophisticated products in the future where the structures and properties of matter are more precisely controlled.

Nanotechnology is one of the fastest growing markets in this century, with applications in nearly all disciplines, including material physics, engineering, pharmaceutical and medical sciences. Therefore, it is inevitable that nanotechnology has to be addressed also in the educational system, with teaching and research in this direction. This will be essential for Thailand, in order to keep its competitiveness on the future global economic markets.

Currently, a major part of the current research and development activities at the Prince of Songkla University (PSU) are supporting the recent trends in nanotechnology. Staff and faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering, Science, and Pharmaceutical Sciences already formed a nanotechnology cluster in 2004. Then in 2006, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the National Nanotechnology Center of Thailand (NANOTEC).

The research activities of the PSU Nanotechnology Cluster (PSU-NanoTeC) are aimed to solve recent problems in health, environment, and material sciences and technology. In a few years, specific outcomes in food technology, tissue engineering, and medical applications are expected from the ongoing activities. Collaboration across different faculties at PSU, cooperation among different Thai universities and with universities and research organizations worldwide will catalyze the multidisciplinary efforts towards education and research in nanotechnology. Prince of Songkla University is the first university in southern Thailand, the region with the largest para rubber plantation area of the country. The university has a large number of researchers on sciences and polymer technology who have high potential to carry out research on para rubber; especially the research team of the Department of Rubber Technology and Polymer, the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, who have been carried out research and development in para rubber for more than 20 years.

The research tam of the Department of Rubber Technology and Polymer has continuously carried out research in para rubber and has enlarged the research scope to include, for examples, molecular modification, preparation of thermoplastic natural rubber, development of rubber latex production process for farmers. Therefore, the setting up of the center of excellence on rubber technology is important and necessary so that the research and development may be guided in the appropriate direction and with ample provision of financial support. The center aims to obtain appropriate knowledge consistent with the need of the industry, agriculturists or government organizations concerned, in order to produce all forms of para rubber products efficiently, adds value, enlarge the scope of para rubber usage so as to bring about an increase in earning per unit of para rubber and an increase in export value which, as a whole, will help the development of the country.

The Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics Research was set up in December 2004 by a group of Molecular biologists at the Prince of Songkla University, one of the most prestigious universities in the southern region of Thailand. Biology is changing rapidly, with the integration of information technology into biological research becoming very important. We realize the need for university infrastructure and personnel with skills in mathematics and computing as well as in the biological sciences. The Center offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics.

It is the grouping of multi-disciplinary researchers of the Faculty of Science into the umbrella of a center of excellence in order to carry out research in natural products. As a group, the academic output is impressive; several new body of knowledge have been found and research papers published in several international journals. Members of the group have received funding continuously from inside and outside sources to do research on natural products. Laboratory spaces and equipments are adequate and up to standard to permit the research on natural products to be carried out effectively in order to improve the potential of the faculties to satisfy the stated goals number 1 and number 2 of the university.

     Nutraceutical and Functional Food Research and Development Center (NFFRDC) was approved by PSU Administrative Council on February 4, 2006. It was established as an administrative center to coordinate PSU’s R&D efforts on nutraceuticals and functional foods (NFF). Six faculties, i.e. Agro-Industry, Management Sciences, Medicine, Natural Resources, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Science, have agreed to participate as members of this multidisciplinary R&D Center. While researchers in each faculty continue to conduct R&D in their existing labs, using the existing facilities, all research activities will be designed and coordinated as parts of the NFFRDC’s projects in accordance with the Center’s strategic plans. The ultimate goal is to develop viable NFF products for which database on raw materials, bioactive compounds, safety, nutritional or medicinal efficacy, dosage, consumer acceptance, and market potential will be compiled from our own R&D and external sources before technology transfer to the private sector is conducted. Networking and collaboration with other related national and international organizations will be explored, and the Center’s R&D results will be widely publicized.

The Faculty of Agro-Industry Prince of Songkla University has long recognized the importance of palm oil and palm oil industry for the communities of southern Thailand. Hence, research on palm oil has been carried out continuously for quite sometimes, and subsequently a research group for excellence in palm oil technology has been set up in 2001. The primary function of the group is concerned with adding of value to palm oil products, investigating palm oil waste usage, treating waste water, applying clean technology to palm oil industry. The research group has produced a considerable number of published papers and the research activities are on the increase. Therefore, the Faculty of Agro-Industry is currently seeking for the establishment of the Center of Excellence on Palm Oil Products and Technology in order that the management of research and development on palm oil and the promotion of palm oil industry may be carried out more efficiently.

The center was set up in 1993 under the name of Oil Palm Research Center under the Office of Research and Development. In 2001, after the Cultural Control unit was transferred to the Faculty of Natural Resources, the center was renamed Oil Palm Research and Development Center under “the Establishment of Research and Services Division Project”, Faculty of Natural Resources. Its duty is to carry out research and development with emphasis on cultural control of oil palm, including economics and marketing aspect, by cooperating in research with other organization units within and outside the Faculty of Natural Resources. In addition, it has the main duty of supporting the teaching of oil palm subjects in various programs of study of the Faculty of Natural Resources, as well as providing academic services to oil palm farmers, and agriculturists whose works are related to the production and development of oil palm, and to the general public.

    Membrane Science and Technology Research Center was the consequent of the strong commitment of a group of Prince of Songkla University’s recipients of the Bureau of University Affairs’ staff development scholarships for 1996. The scholarships offered opportunity for study and research in biophysics and membrane technology under the auspices of UNESCO Center for Membrane Science and Technology, University of New South Wales. Almost immediately after returning from Australia, the recipients of the scholarship started to form “ the Biophysics, Science and Membrane Technology Research Group”.

    It is evident that the environmental problems resulting from industrial development, sea water intrusion into underground water sources in coastal area, contamination of natural water sources by arsenic and heavy metals always lead to low quality natural water for drinking and domestic use, which greatly affects the health and quality of life of the people in the community. The research group thus decides to carry out research and develop membrane which can be used to improve the quality of natural water for the rural community, with initial objectives on improving the quality of drinking water. The initial phase of research was concentrated on developing membrane which is capable of separating particles in the region of micro and nano range. In 2002, the University Council approved the establishment of Membrane Science and Technology Research Center with the stated duty of providing research works for graduate study, developing personnel in this field, cooperating with the universities in Malaysia and Indonesia to organize regional conference, and arranging conferences and workshop training at Prince of Sonkla University. The development of the center, starting from a group of a few people until becoming a center of excellence, is truly multi-disciplinary and integrated, involving research personnel from several faculties, such as the Faculty of Science, Agro-Industry, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sciences and Technology and graduate school.

    The Faculty of Engineering has carried out research on alternative energy such as wind energy, biogas and others since 1975. Research on palm oil was also started at about the same time, but become concrete in 1983 after His Royal Highness the King graciously offered the Royal Remark that the development of small scale palm oil press would greatly be beneficial to small palm oil planter in the rural area. In 1984, PSU initiated small scale palm oil industry development project and has since continuously carried out research on the subject. On the biodiesel issue, the Faculty of Engineering has started the research and development on biodiesel since 2001.
    As the university development plan for the period 2002-2006 promoted the setting up of specialized research institutes; in order to make the direction of specialized research be more coherent and able to support graduate education efficiently, the Faculty of Engineering has decided to set up the Specialized Research and Development Center for Alternative Energy from Palm Oil and Oil Crops. The center has investigated and developed palm oil processing technology of both the farmer and the industry sectors, which in itself is the continuation of various research on Promotion of Small Palm Oil Industry and Biodiesel Production Technology. Examples of these development are the building of biodiesel production factory of 1000 liters capacity at the Faculty of Engineering in 2002, the building of biodiesel production factory of 400 liters capacity at Pikulthong Development and Learning Center at Narathiwas province in 2003, research on the production of biodiesel using palm oil fat from waste water pond of the palm oil extraction factory as well as the testing on palm oil and methyl-ester used in agricultural machinery. Many research projects have been continuously supported by the Chaipattana Foundation, the Royal Funds, and Office of the Royal Development Projects Board as well as revenues from both the Faculty of Engineering and Prince of Songkla University.

    At the present, the center has increased the production of biodiesel for research to 5000 liters per week, build a continuous biodiesel production demonstration set to help those who are interest to better understand the process of bio-diesel production, study biodiesel production from other raw materials such as fatty acid, soap base, study the production of biodiesel using solid catalyst and using microwave etc. In addition, the center has been contracted to research and develop prototype commercial biodiesel production factory with the capacity of 10,000 liters per day for Krabi province; and prototype factory to produce alternative energy biodiesel with the capacity of 10,000 liters per day for Surat Thani province. The proudest moment of the center was the auspicious occasion when it has the opportunity to present progress report on biodiesel research to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on her visit to the center on January 16, 2006. In the capacity of the president of the Chaipattana Foundation, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has graciously approved the funding of research on Competitive Biodiesel Technology, which hopefully will provide a basis for industrial production with more than 100,000 liters per day capacity.

      The Molecular Pharmaceutics Unit, (MP-RU), is one of the research units within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The principal idea behind the setting up of MP-RU is to create a mechanism that can provide opportunity for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, experience and for research collaboration among researchers who are interest in pharmaceutical material details at the molecular level. Collaborative efforts may involve the use of chemical sciences in synthesizing or developing new drug structures, the use of analytical chemistry in the study of pharmacokinetics and the use of pharmaceutical science in developing new potent prescription drugs of good quality. It is anticipated that this concerted effort in research at molecular level will greatly enhance the research and development of drugs particularly in the search for new drug structures or in the development of existing drugs to make them more potent with regards to physical, chemical or bioavailability properties using chemical and/or pharmaceutical processes. New therapeutic properties and side effects of several drugs in use nowadays could be found using modern biotechnology and in depth studies of drug targets and receptors.

     The concept of setting up the Institute of Research and Development for Health of Southern Thailand has began in 2003, with the intention of enlarging the potential of health professionals in solving health problems and developing the better health condition in southern Thailand. With the support of Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Thai Research Fund and Prince of Songkla University, the establishment of the Institute of Research and Development for Health of Southern Thailand was accomplished in 2004.
