History: The tendency for regionalization and internationalization of the world community in the age of globalization and information society is the catalyst which necessitates a better understanding of the culture and overall potential of ourselves and of our neighboring countries, especially those of the Southeast Asian Maritime States which consists of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bruneidaruslam, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand. The Pattani Campus, Prince of Songkla University has realized the importance and necessity of such understanding of our neighboring countries, and has set up the Institute of Southeast Asian Maritime States Studies to carry out the work and to create friendly relationships among the Southeast Asian Maritime States. The followings are the main issues and area of study which are of interest to the institute.

1. To study and gather past and present information about politics, administration, culture, economics of the southern boarder provinces, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwas Provinces, with emphasis on Pattani.
2. To study the common characteristics and traits in races, religions, and culture of the people of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwas, Songkla provinces and compare them with those of the Southeast Asian Maritime States.
3. To study the influences, advantages and drawbacks of various existing regional cooperation treaties or trade agreements, such as ASIAN, NAM, AFTA, APEC, IMT-GT, on the Asian Maritime States.
4. To give special attention to the study of our neighboring countries on the east and west, namely Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, which have similar culture, and historically have a mixed relationship with Thailand. These countries are now members of ASEAN.
