On September 22, 1967, His Majesty the King graciously granted the University the name “Prince of Songkla University” in honor of his beloved father, His Royal Highness Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Luang Songkla Nakarin. In commemoration of this auspicious occasion, the university has since proclaimed September, 22 of every year as “Songkla Nakarin Day”, one of the important dates in the calendar of yearly events of the university. A brief history of the University and the biography of the University namesake, His Royal Highness the King’s father may be found through the links shown below.
The university’s namesake, His Royal Highness Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Luang Songkla Nakarin, formerly Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, was the father of King Ananda Mahidol and King Bhumibol Adulyadej. HRH Prince Mahidol was born on 1st January 1892, the 69th child of His Majesty King Rama V and the 7th of Queen Savang Vadhana.
Prince Mahidol was brought up according to the Royal Thai tradition, started his education at the Royal School within the Grand Palace and ordained at the age of 13 as a Buddhist novice. Before his ordination, the title of Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Khun Songkla Nakarin was bestowed upon him. He was later sent to study at Harrow, a renowned public boarding school in England, for about one year and a half. In accordance with the wishes of his Royal Father, who had close relation with Emperor Wiliiam II, Prince Mahidol proceeded to study in Germany, at the Royal Prussian Military Preparatory college at Potsdam which offered course of study in the humanities and sciences in addition to training in military discipline. The education in humanities and sciences while at Potsdam had profound and lasting impacts on his outlook, philosophy and personality. His Royal Highness furthered his study at the Imperial Military Academy at Gross Lichterfelde in Berlin and subsequently attended the Murwik Imperial German Naval Academy at Flensburg in 1912. In that year he was commissioned as Lieutenant in both the imperial German Navy and the Royal Thai Navy. At the outbreak of World War I, after completing naval study in Germany, Prince Mahidol returned to Thailand and was assigned to a teaching post at the Royal Naval Academy.

As a teacher, Prince Mahidol came to aware of the extent of the poor state of the teaching of basic sciences in Thailand. Through contact with his half-brother and old friend, Prince Rangsit, who was then the Chief of the Royal Medical College, Prince Mahidol also came to recognized the dire need for improvement in the standards of medical and public health education in Thailand, particularly the conditions of medical practice which was much lagged behind the western standard. He had come to the conclusion that good education in basic sciences and a well maintained public health service is essential factor in the development of human resources of the country. In 1916 after being promoted to the rank of Captain (Royal Guard), Prince Mahidol resigned from the Royal Thai Navy to pursue his conviction by going aboard to study public health at Harvard, Massachusetts.
With a plan to support hospitals and medical school in Thailand, Prince Mahidol and his Queen Mother used their own fund to set up scholarships for Thai citizens to study medicine and public health related fields aboard. The first group of scholarship-holders were sent to study in the US, one of them Miss Sangwan Talaphat a nursing student, was to become his future wife. Prince Mahidol married Miss Sangwan Talaphat on 10 September 1920 and received his Certificate in Public Health from Harvard in 1921. During his stay in the United States he was asked to represent the Thai government in liaising with the Rockefeller Foundation which was offering monetary and technical help to improve Thailand’s medical and public health education.
Prince Mahidol returned to Thailand in 1923 to take up the position of Director-General of the University Department in the Ministry of Education and continued liaising with the Rockefeller Foundation until the final agreement was made. With his new position, he modernized the teaching of science subjects and revised curricular, established laboratories and acquired up-to-date equipments for these laboratories. In 1925 Prince Mahidol went back to his alma mater, Harvard University, again to study medicine. He received his M.D.(cum laude) in 1928 and was elected a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha. Prince Mahidol returned to Thailand in December 1928. Prince Mahidol died on 24 September 1929 at the age of 37 years 8 months and 23 days. He was posthumously bestowed the title of Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Luang Songkla Nakarin on 30 November 1929 by King Rama VII, and later the title of Somdej Phra Mahitalathibet Adulyadejvikrom Phra Boromarajachanok, by King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
HRH Prince Mahidol first child, HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana was born on 10 May 1923 in London. His second child, HRH Prince Ananda Mahidol, later became King Ananda Mahidol, was born on 20 September 1925 in Heidelburg Germany. His third and last child, HRH Prince Bhumibol Adulyadej, who is now King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was born on 5 December 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States. His consort, HRH The Princess Mother, died on 18th July 1995, at the age of 95 year.
During his short span of working life, HRH Prince Mahidol had taken up many positions related to education and medicine. He was Director-General of the University Department in the Ministry of Education; Chairman of the board of Faculty of Siriraj College of Medicine and Nursing; committee member of the council of Thai Red Cross Society; Chairman of organising committee of Vajira Hospital; invited lecturer of the Faculty of Science and Arts Chulalongkorn University; and resident doctor in McCormick Hospital in Chiangmai. His initiative and effort produced a most remarkable and lasting impact on the improvement of modern medicine and public health in Thailand, such that he was honored with the title of “ Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health of Thailand”

HRH Prince Mahidol also left a legacy of his humanistic outlook and the believe in human dignity and worth in the form of several speech and pronouncements. One of his most memorable statements highly respected for its wisdom and moral value is “Let consideration of personal gain take second place for the overall benefit of mankind. Prestige and wealth are natural rewards for a just and sincere dedication to work”. This has become the guiding light for Prince of Songkla University, and adopted as its dedication statement.
In 1962 the Department of Provincial Administration was assigned by the Thai government, through the Southern Development Committee, to initiate a project to set up a university in southern Thailand in accordance with the Southern Development plan. In the beginning, the Southern Thailand University Project Committee intended to set up a college of Arts and Sciences first before developing further into a full fledged university. The work had progressed smoothly to the stage that the committee had decided to survey and decide upon the area on which the university would be built. The first area chosen for surveying was “Tung Naren, Botong village, NongJig district, Pattani Province. However, the work of this committee came to a temporary stop due to budget curtailment in 1963 and due to the change of government. The work was resumed after a new Southern Development Committee was formed, headed by His Excellency Colonel Thanat Khoman, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In 1965 the cabinet approved in principle, that the main campus of the university was to be at Ruesamilae village (now a subdistrict), Muang District, Pattani Province, and additional faculties or campuses were to be subsequently established in several other southern provinces. It was originally planned that the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Education and Faculty of Political Science, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy be located at Pattani Province, Yala Province, Muang district Songkla Provinces and Hat Yai district Songkla Province respectively.
The Southern Thailand University Establishment Committee, set up in 1965 with Colonel Thanat Khoman as its chairman, was entrusted with the task of overseeing the construction of necessary university facilities and administering the fledgling institution. In the beginning the administration format of the university was in the form of a committee (the Southern Thailand University Establishment Committee) with its chairman, colonel Thanat Khoman, acting as the president of the university, and professor Stang Mongkolsuk as acting vice president. With temporary administration office situated in Bangkok, at a building of the Faculty of Science, University of Medicine (now a building of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University), construction was commenced at Rusamilae, Pattani Province in 1966. While the institution was being built, for lack of an official name, the name of “Southern University” was adopted.
In order that the university would be a center of the hearts and minds of Thai people as well as to bring good fortune, prosperity and success to the university, it was humbly requested that His Majesty the King bestowed a name on the university. On September 22, 1967 His Majesty the King graciously granted the university the name “Prince of Songkla University” in honor of his beloved father, His Royal Highness Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Luang Songkla Nakarin. In commemoration of this auspicious occasion, the university has since proclaimed September, 22 of every year as “Songkla Nakarin Day”, one of the important dates in the calendar of yearly events of the university.
In 1967, while still at its temporary site in Bangkok, the first group of 50 students enrolled in engineering programs in the Faculty of Engineering, the first faculty of the university. the Faculty of Science was also set up to service the teaching of basic science, humanities, and social science subjects to the students. The teaching of basic engineering subjects of practical nature were carried out with the co-operation of the Military Technical Training School. The first batch of 5 teaching staff members recruited by the university were, Dr. Pradit Sheoychitra, Dr. Nart Tuntawiroon, Dr. Prida Wibulswas, Dr. Siripong Sripipat, and Mr. Yenchai Laohavanich.
While the construction of campus at Pattani was in progress, Prof. Stang Monkolsuk took the newly recruited teaching staffs on an on-site inspection of the campus. After which opinions prevailed that since the Pattani site is a seashore area, very high humidity and sea water vapor would lead to prohibitive maintenance cost for the up-keeping of the engineering laboratory equipments and engineering teaching facilities (which mainly would be of metal or electronics equipments) if the Faculty of Engineering were to situated there. It had been agreed to relocate the Faculty of Engineering to a new site to be decided upon later, and planned to establish the Faculty of Education and other faculties related to arts and social sciences at Pattani site instead. After a long search, it was decided that the Faculty of Engineering should be located in Hat Yai District, Songkla Province. Lady Atthakraweesunthorn, the surviving widow of Phraya Atthakraweesunthorn, who owned several plots of lands in the area had been approached. She kindly agreed to donate a plot of land total 690 rai (approximately 276 acres) at Tambon Korhong, Hat Yai district, Songkla Province to be used as a new campus of Prince of Songkla University upon which the Faculty of Engineering would be located.
In 1968 the parliament passed Prince of Songkla University Act, which became effective on March 13 of that year. Prince of Songkla University thus proclaimed March 13 as its “Foundation Day”. On April 8, 1968 there was a royal decree established officially the first three organizational units in the university, namely the office of the president, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science. On April 17, 1968 a royal command was issued announcing His Excellency Colonel Thanat Khoman as the president of the university. Prof. Stang Mongkolsuk become again the vice president. In June 1968 the first group of 58 students enrolled in education programs in the Faculty of Education, with 33 major in Science and 25 in Liberal Arts. All the students of the Faculty of Education also studied at the temporary site in Bangkok. On November 9, 1968 all staffs and students of the Faculty of Education were moved to Pattani campus while those of the Faculty of Engineering were still in Bangkok. On December 5, 1968 there was a royal decree officially added the Faculty of Education as an organizational unit of the university.
The Faculty of Science enrolled its first group of students, 60 in all, in 1969 academic year, and in that year construction at Hat Yai campus were started. On July 5, 1971 when it was partially completed, about two hundreds of all 2nd – 4th year students and staffs of the Faculty of Engineering were moved to the new campus at Hat Yai, while first year engineering students still studied in Bangkok. Not until at the beginning of the first semester of academic year 1972 was the moving of students and staffs of the Faculty of Engineering to Hat Yai campus completed.
Realizing that computer application would play an important and increasing roll in the academic realm, a plan to set up the university computer center was drawn up as early as 1975. In order to increase its engagement with local communities, the university decided to set up a community college at Phuket Province in 1977, the first commuity college in Thailand. The Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Management sciences and the Faculty of Natural Resources were established in 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1977 respectively. Enrollment of students into the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences started in 1979, the same year with the starting operation of the Graduate School. After more than 5 years under the umbrella of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Nursing was formally established in 1980.
First enrollment of students into the Faculty of Dentistry and the formal establishment of the Computer Center of the university both occurred in 1983. In the same year, by setting up a server “Sritrang.psu.th” which was the first server in Thailand, Prince of Songkla University became Thailand’s first gateway to the Internet. The first message sent from the Computer Center Prince of Songkla University to a server at the University of Melbourne on June 2, 1988 heralded the dawn of the Internet era in Thailand. As befitted its Pattani Campus which is situated in the area of diverse cultural background predominantly of Islamic culture, Prince of Songkla University established the College of Islamic Studies at Pattani Campus in 1989.
Since then the university has progressed at an accelerated rate to its present state. After more than forty years of existence, Prince of Songkla University has become a university with four campuses and one education service area with the number of students reaching thirty thousands. Prince of Songkla University now consists of 25 faculties offering 238 programs of study, which are composed of 20 programs of doctoral or equivalent level, 9 programs of specialization in medicine, 86 programs of master degree level, 2 programs of graduate diploma level and 121 programs (4 – 6 year programs of study) of bachelor degree level.
As an institution of higher learning, Prince of Songkla University is committed to academic excellence, reputable research and innovation. It has contributed significantly to the development of the country and consistently turned out well qualified graduates of high professional standing. The university is proud of its distinguished record of achievements in teaching, research, development and services to communities.
The University’s direction of development which is consistent with the vision of becoming a leading university in Asia with the main objectives of producing graduates, providing academic services to community and involving in preservation of national heritage in arts and culture, all through research based platform, has been formalized and incorporated into the University policy and development plan for the period 2007-2011.

Wherever practicable, the services provided will be tailored to meet the requirement and consistent with the need of local communities.
Prince of Songkla University is the first university in Southern Thailand. The construction of buildings and necessary facilities was first commenced in 1966 at Tambon Ruesamilae, Pattani Province. Three year later, in 1969, construction of buildings and facilities was started at the second Campus, at Tambon Korhong, Hat Yai District, Songkla Province. In 1971, when the construction of facilities at the second Campus was partially completed, about two hundreds of all 2nd – 4th year students and staff of the Faculty of Engineering were moved to the new campus at Hat Yai, while first year engineering students still studied at the temporary site at Bangkok. Before the starting of the first semester of academic year 1972, the temporary University site at Bangkok was closed and the rest of students and staff of the Faculty of Engineering and all of the students and staff of the Faculty of Science were moved to Hat Yai Campus. The central administration of Prince of Songkla University was relocated to its permanent site at Hay Yai Campus. Since then the Campus has developed tremendously. It now has fourteen faculties which offer hundreds of programs of study ranging from undergraduate to post doctoral levels. Further information about the Campus may found through the links shown below :

From the date of the establishment of Prince of Songkla University, the first university in Southern Thailand, up to the present time (academic year 2006) which is all together 41 years, the University has produced 37 batches of graduates totaling over 70,000, for all degree levels. Our University alumni are working all over the country in every province, and some are working abroad. Various groups of our alumni have banded together and have formed many associations or clubs around the country. Most of these may be grouped into four categories, namely, the PSU Alumni Association, provincialwise grouping, facultywise grouping, and campuswise grouping. Normally the main purposes of these groupings are for organizing activities relating to the University or socializing in special occasions once or twice a year. All their activities are disjointed and there is no mechanism that can coordinate these activities or systematically link them with the University to utilize the University resources for promotion purposes.
In order to create opportunities for these alumni associations and clubs to stay in touch with the University and to seek their cooperation in such matters as supplying information for graduate quality improvement, advising on employment opportunities, proposing research problems, supporting or funding University researches, promoting and participating in University activities, as well as uniting their efforts in creating a powerful and sustainable driving force necessary to help propel the development of the University; a new approach in managing alumni resources must be initiated.
On two occasions, on April, 30, 2005 and on September 2006, informal meetings took place between the University and a group of alumni who has been actively involved in several alumni associations and clubs. A consensus has been reached that an office “ The Office of Alumni Relations” be established to act as the focal point to systematically coordinate and link all PSU alumni associations and clubs together and to provide impetus for the concerted effort in helping to develop our beloved University.
To unite physically and spiritually all Prince of Songkla University alumni in order to upheld the honor and prestige of our institution.

The internal financial auditing of government organizations arose from the recommendation submitted to the Cabinet by the Finance Ministry. It was recommended in 1976 that all government organizations at the levels of Ministry, Bureau, Department or equivalence should be allotted manpower entrusted with the specific task of internal financial auditing of the organizations. The Cabinet had sanctioned the recommendation and instructed the Civil Service Commission to consider and allocate necessary manpower required for the task to all government organizations. HAT Yai Campus has two main libraries; Khunying Long Athakravisunthorn Learning Resources Center, and the the Health Science Library which was originally “the Library of the Faculty of Medicine, Hat Yai Campus, Prince of Songkla University”.
During the first decade of the university, each of the faculties at Hat Yai Campus Prince of Songkla University, had its own library, and there was no concerted effort to reorganize the library system of the Campus, despite the apparent disadvantages of the system with disjointed libraries. The attempt to centralize the library resources started in mid 1970 by Prof. Sawas Sakulthai, the fourth president of the university. The libraries of the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Science was relocated to the same new location and all their resources combined and came under the management of a central unit “ Khnying Long Athakravisunthorn Library”, which officially opened on November 24, 1978. Initially the library was a unit in the Education Service Division of the Office of the President, and in June 1989 it was upgraded to “KhunYing Long AthakravisunthornLearning Resources Center” under the Office of Academic Services.

The Health Science Library was originally “the Library of the Faculty of Medicine, Hat Yai Campus, Prince of Songkla University” established in 1973. Initially it was temporary located in the main building of the Faculty of Engineering, with area of only about 20 square meters. Most of its medical books were the donation from the Fifth Field Hospital, an American Army hospital in Bangkok which was dismantled after the Vietnam War. Since the number of books in the library was small, a lecturer in the Department of Nursing was asked to help in the running the library.
In 1976, a librarian from the Medical Library, Chulalongkorn University was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, and she was assigned to run the medical library. In 1979 the library was moved to the third floor of the Administrative Building, Faculty of Medicine, with the area of 1000 square meters. It was again moved in 1986 to its permanent location at the Combined Lecture and Library Building, with the floor area of 2042 square meters and 250 seating capacity.
After the Office of Academic Services, Prince of Songkla University was established in 1989, the Medical Library was renamed “the Health Science Library”, and became, structurally but not administratively, a division under its wings. The yearly budgeting request for the Health Science Library is mainly prepared by the Faculty of Medicine; only limited items is prepared by the Office of Academic Services.

This can result in research works of more immediate use to the community which may be further developed to obtain works of international quality. In addition, it will help develop and mould graduates of the university to become citizens with public consciousness, idealism and appreciation of local community way of life. The Institute of Research and Development for Health of Southern Thailand has thus decided to set up the PSU Volunteer Project in order to bring about the benefit mentioned, and to make the university presence be more appreciated by the community.

After consultation with the rest of the committee, the foundation responded with a grant of 3,595,000 Baht for the construction of a two-storey building of the library, which was subsequently named the John F. In the fiscal years 1995 the library received a special budget of 17,000,000 Baht, spreading over three years, earmarked for the development which would make the library an automatic library according to the Development of Provincial University Libraries System (PULINET) project.

The Oil Palm Research Unit Prince of Songkla University Surat Thani Campus has carried out research and published works on oil palm and palm oil continuously, in the same direction as the Oil Palm Research and Development Center Hat Yai Campus. The Unit receives funding from the Thailand Research Fund (TRF), the Higher Education Commission, National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Biotec), Suratthani Provincial Administration Organization, Suratthani Oil Palm Research Center, and several other companies in the Surat Thani and nearby provinces. The Research Unit has been successful in efficiently transferring the knowledge obtained from researches to government and private sectors, and to oil palm agriculturalists of the area.
“The Establishment of Trang Campus, Prince of Songkla University project” sprang from the initiation of His Excellency Chuan Leekpai who was then concurrently a member of the house of representative for Trang Province and the Vice Chairman of Prince of Songkla University Council. His Excellency had proposed in his letter to the then president of Prince of Songkla University that the University should seriously consider the extension of its academic service area to cover Trang Province. The rationale behind his proposal was that although Trang Province is the most populated province on the west coast of Southern Thailand and being the center of Middle Southern Thailand, it still lacks tertiary education institution (university).
A consultation meeting was then called between the University representatives and the representatives of the private sector and government officials of Trang Province. The outcome was that it is feasible to operate certain programs of study at Trang Province. The program of study agreed upon is the Business Administration in Business Computer. The University had then set up “The Establishment of Trang Campus, Prince of Songkla University project” and extend its education services area to include Trang Province. Subsequently, the then Bureau of University Affairs, had proposed that the format of the new Campus be revised from “a normal campus” to “ an information campus”. That is the dissemination of knowledge or information to students should rely more through online acquisition than through physical contact. The programs of study offered at Trang Campus place more emphasis on applied social science business and service industry, including business related technology. The Trang Campus is situated at Tambon Kuanpring, Muang District, Trang Province. At the present it has only one faculty, the Faculty of Commerce and Management. 2. Direct Admission
One of the principal objectives of Prince of Songkla University is to be the center of education which will serve and enhance the opportunities for tertiary education of the people in the region. To increase the opportunities for students of Southern Thailand to study at Prince of Songkla University, the University had set aside, in 1973-1974, a quota of 10 % of the number of student admitted that year, for distinguished students who finished their high school study from the schools in Southern Thailand. In 1975, from 1976-1979, and from 1980-2008 the University had increased the amount set aside to 30 %, 40 %, and 50 %, respectively, but introduced a competitive examination instead of direct quota. For next academic year the amount set aside will be increased to 75 %.
From the analysis of Direct Admission data it was found that students from smaller schools in rural areas had disproportionately lower chances of being admitted to the University in comparison with larger schools of the urban areas. In order to address this undesirable consequences, the University has separated the applicants into two groups, group 1 and group 2, and allotted 40 % and 60 % of the total direct admission quota for students group 1 and group 2, respectively. Group 1 students are the students who belong to the top 10 % of each school, the rest of the applicants are classified as group 2 students. The change in admission procedure has resulted in the increase of the number of students from rural area who can enter the University.
3. Admission under direct management of separate faculties:
This is the admission of students to diploma or certificate levels programs of study, continuing study for Bachelor programs, graduate programs, and special Bachelor programs of study. The selection criteria, scheduling of application, examination/ interview for these programs of study will be carried out solely by the responsible faculties, and the detais will be announced periodically as situation demand.

Research and development in nanotechnology is directed towards the understanding and control of matter and materials at dimensions of nanometers (0.000000001 m) and towards the creating of novel materials, devices, and systems that have unique and useful properties. The applications of nanotechnology already lead to the development of economic valuable products with even more sophisticated products in the future where the structures and properties of matter are more precisely controlled.
Nanotechnology is one of the fastest growing markets in this century, with applications in nearly all disciplines, including material physics, engineering, pharmaceutical and medical sciences. Therefore, it is inevitable that nanotechnology has to be addressed also in the educational system, with teaching and research in this direction. This will be essential for Thailand, in order to keep its competitiveness on the future global economic markets.
Currently, a major part of the current research and development activities at the Prince of Songkla University (PSU) are supporting the recent trends in nanotechnology. Staff and faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering, Science, and Pharmaceutical Sciences already formed a nanotechnology cluster in 2004. Then in 2006, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the National Nanotechnology Center of Thailand (NANOTEC).
The research activities of the PSU Nanotechnology Cluster (PSU-NanoTeC) are aimed to solve recent problems in health, environment, and material sciences and technology. In a few years, specific outcomes in food technology, tissue engineering, and medical applications are expected from the ongoing activities. Collaboration across different faculties at PSU, cooperation among different Thai universities and with universities and research organizations worldwide will catalyze the multidisciplinary efforts towards education and research in nanotechnology. These websites are intended to show some of the recent results of the PSU Nanotechnology Cluster (PSU-Nanotec) and to inform about ongoing activities.

The Molecular Pharmaceutics Unit, (MP-RU), is one of the research units within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The principal idea behind the setting up of MP-RU is to create a mechanism that can provide opportunity for the exchange of knowledge, ideas, experience and for research collaboration among researchers who are interest in pharmaceutical material details at the molecular level. Collaborative efforts may involve the use of chemical sciences in synthesizing or developing new drug structures, the use of analytical chemistry in the study of pharmacokinetics and the use of pharmaceutical science in developing new potent prescription drugs of good quality. It is anticipated that this concerted effort in research at molecular level will greatly enhance the research and development of drugs particularly in the search for new drug structures or in the development of existing drugs to make them more potent with regards to physical, chemical or bioavailability properties using chemical and/or pharmaceutical processes. New therapeutic properties and side effects of several drugs in use nowadays could be found using modern biotechnology and in depth studies of drug targets and receptors.
